Cases of novel influenza A (H1N1) are expected to increase in the fall — "perhaps earlier than what we see with seasonal influenza" — Dr. Anne Schuchat said at a CDC press briefing on Friday. She added that "every year in the fall, there's an increase in respiratory illness, not just influenza, when kids go back to school and people get back together and the germs [are] getting shared."
The CDC will update its guidance for schools, according to Dr. Schuchat.
In addition, at the end of July, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet to decide which populations should be targeted for vaccination. At that time, the ACIP will also discuss whether it is appropriate to plan for managing a possibly limited vaccine supply.
